WITTENBERG, Mo. -- Gilbert A. Theiss, 83, of Wittenberg died Friday, Oct. 6, 2006, at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau. He was born May 16, 1923, at Wittenberg, son of Paul J. and Clara M. Hilpert Theiss. He and Viola F. Gerler were married Dec. 26, 1942...

A funeral service will be held Monday for 83-year-old Gilbert A. Theiss of Wittenberg who died Friday, Oct. 6 at the Lutheran Home in Cape Girardeau.He was born on May 16, 1923 in Wittenberg, the son of the late Paul J. and Clara M. (Hilpert) Theiss.

He was married to Viola F. Gerler on Dec. 26, 1942. She survives in Wittenberg.

Also surviving are two daughters and sons in law and one son: Kathy and Dan Schoenherr of Frohna; Nancy and Lynn Ponivas of Alton, Ill.; and Gilbert A. "Bud" Theiss Jr. of Detroit, Michigan.

Three brothers survive: Paul H. Theiss and the Rev. Louis Theiss, both of Perryville; and Rev. Harry Theiss of Glen Ullen, North Dakota.

Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Kurt Schoenherr, Deanne Davenport, Renee, Marc and Erich Theiss and Bram, Drew and John Ponivas. One great-grandchild, Allison Davenport, survives.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Trinity Voters Assembly in Altenburg, Perry County Lutheran Historical Society, National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), Perry County Historical Society, the Missouri State Historical Society; Altenburg Lions Club and American Legion Post 133 in Perryville.

He was a past member of Perry County Library Board, the Riverside Regional Library Board; New Bourbon Regional Port Authority and the former Perry County Chapter of the American Red Cross, U.S. Army veteran of World War II, 88th Division Associaiton; 351st Combat Infantry from 1944-1945; recipient of 3 Battle Stars, The Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star for action in Italy.

Funeral service for Gilbert A. Theiss was held Monday at 10 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church. Rev. Steven Dressler will officiate. Burial in the church cemetery. Military graveside services provided by American Legion Post 133.

Memorials may be sent to the Trinity Lutheran Organ Fund or charity of choice.

Young and Sons Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
