A funeral will be held Saturday, March 8, 2014 for 90-year-old Viola Theiss, formerly of Wittenberg, who died March 1, 2014 at Independence Care Center of Perry County in Perryville.

She was born January 20, 1924, in Altenburg, the daughter of Rudolph and Dorothy (Mueller) Gerler who both preceded her in death.

She married Gilbert Theiss December 26, 1942. He preceded her in death on October 6, 2006.

She is survived by two daughters and a son: Kathy (Dan) Schoenherr of Frohna, Nancy Ponivas of Alton, Illinois and Gilbert A. Theiss of East Pointe, Michigan; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a son-in-law: Lynn Ponivas; a brother: George Gerler; and a sister: Norma Engelhardt.

Viola retired as postmaster after 17 years at the Wittenberg Post Office and eight years at the Frohna Post Office.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and LWML of Altenburg, Altenburg Lion’s Club, and NARFE Chapter 1237.

She was a former member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, LWML, and church organist for 35 years in Wittenberg.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, March 7 and 6:30-8:30 a.m. Saturday, March 8 at the Young & Sons East Perry Chapel in Altenburg.

A funeral for 90-year-old Viola Theiss, formerly of Wittenberg, will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 8, 2014 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Altenburg. The Rev. Steven Dressler will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to UCLS, Saxony Lutheran High School or to a charity of choice.
