Thompson, Denzel Dean
Denzel Dean Thompson, 77, of Jackson passed away Thursday, April 12, 2012, at Southeast Hospital in Cape Girardeau, where he had been a patient for two weeks.
He was born Oct. 24, 1934, near Neelys Landing to William Denver and Earley Cathreen Craft Thompson. He was married to Carolyn McNeely on April 12, 1957, at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church in Fruitland
He attended Oak Hill School in Cape Girardeau County. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in May 1957 and served mostly at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., and was honorably discharged in May 1959.
Denzel worked several years at Superior Electric Co. in Cape Girardeau. He later worked for Elmer Proctor Construction, Lincoln-McBride, H&T Builders, then retired in 1996 from Thompson Siding, which he owned and operated.
His hobby was raccoon hunting and later riding horses. He was a longtime member of the Cape County Coon Hunters Association and the Jackson Trail Riders. He also rode with the Old Timers on Tuesdays when he was able.
He attended First Presbyterian Church in Jackson and was a board member of the Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Cemetery Association for several years.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Carolyn of Jackson; two daughters, Linda Malone of Jackson, Lisa Cooper of Cape Girardeau; four grandchildren, Ashley and Jamie Cooper of Cape, Samuel and Luke Malone of Jackson; a sister, Blanch Johnson of Cape Girardeau; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Pearl Thompson of Jackson; four sisters, Eloise Clemons and Janice Ayres of Miami, Okla., Velma McLain and Hazel Clippard of Cape Girardeau.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home in Jackson.
The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home, with Dr. Grant F.C. Gillard officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Cemetery in Fruitland.
Memorials may be made to Pleasant Hill Cemetery Association, First Presbyterian Church of Jackson or to New Bethel Baptist Church of Pocahontas, which he attended as a child.
