Turner, Alta Virginia (nee Cook)
Alta V. Turner, 89, of Cape Girardeau died Thursday, April 9, 2009, at Saint Francis Medical Center.
She was born Sept. 5, 1919, in Sedgewickville, Mo., daughter of Ode Andrew and Minnie May Seabaugh Cook. She and Claud M. Turner were married Oct. 16, 1942, at Sikeston, Mo. He preceded her in death Nov. 17, 1996.
Mrs. Turner was a 1937 graduate of Central High School and attended Southeast Missouri State University.
She was a mother and a homemaker. In addition, she was a seamstress at Rust and Martin for 16 years. She had previously worked at Superior Electric in Cape Girardeau and at a naval munitions facility in Hawthorne, Nev., during World War II. Mrs. Turner was a member of Maple United Methodist Church, having joined the church Easter Sunday 1933. She was a volunteer at Southeast Missouri Hospital more than 10 years.
Survivors include two sons, Robert C. "Bob" Turner of Tomball, Texas, James A. "Jim" Turner of Imperial, Mo.; five grandchildren, Kathryn Holland, Nicholas Turner, Victoria Whitman, Tara Sue Schnable and Sierra Noel Carruthers; 10 great-grandchildren; and cousin and longtime friend Iona Williams of Cape Girardeau.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother, Rusby Cook.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Jim Cooper officiating. Entombment will be in Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Memorials may be made to American Lung Association, Leukemia Research Foundation or Maple United Methodist Church.
