Umfleet, Larry Joe

Loving husband and father, Larry Joe Umfleet of Scott City left this earth and went to be with his heavenly Father Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006.

He was born April 25, 1944, in Bloomfield, Mo., to Thelma LeGrand Umfleet and Lawrence Umfleet.

Larry was a 1962 graduate of Advance High School. Upon graduation he went to work for Road Sprinkler Fitters Local 669. In 2003 he retired from Western Kentucky Sprinkler Co. after 41 years of dedicated service.

Larry leaves behind an abundance of friends in his work with Western Kentucky Sprinkler Co. and Local Union 669.

Larry was as dedicated to his volunteer work as he was to his job. Throughout the years he served in the Civil Defense Unit and Rotary Club in Delta, Lions Club in Chaffee, Mo., and was involved with the Chaffee Youth Baseball League.

He was a member of New McKendree United Methodist Church in Jackson. He was an active participant in the Men's Club and part of a Men's Bible Study. Through the church Larry was able to serve the Lord through mission trips to Florida for hurricane relief, Wyoming building churches, and various other outreach services.

On Feb. 15, 1964, he married Carol Ann Duncan. They have four children, Robin Umfleet (Mark) McKinley of Cape Girardeau, Jeffrey Scott (Angela) Umfleet of Calvert City, Ky.; Sheila Umfleet of Benton, Mo., and Michael Umfleet (Angie) of Scott City.

Larry was blessed by six grandchildren, Jason Umfleet, Ashlyn and Duncan McKinley, Chaiz Scheeter, Nicolis Umfleet and Abby Umfleet. Larry loved his grandchildren and was able to devote his retirement years to enjoying them.

Surviving family members include mother-in-law, Virginia Duncan; sister-in-law, Sharon Kirchhoff; brothers-in-law, Mike and LaDonna Duncan, David and Barbara Duncan, and Mark Duncan. Also surviving are brothers, Bill, Don, Richard, Mike, Dennis and Herman Umfleet; and sisters, Vickie Phelps, Sue Ann Thompson, Thelma Gavel, Imogene DeLay.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Lawrence "Sonny," Roger, Russ, Cletus; sister, LeLa; father-in-law, Orville Duncan; and brother-in-law, Paul Kirchhoff.

Friends and family visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday and memorial celebration of his life at 7 at New McKendree United Methodist Church on High Street in Jackson.

In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to New McKendree United Methodist Church or National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 1867 Lackland Hill Parkway, St. Louis, Mo., 63146.
