Underwood, Lila Jean (nee Sitzes)

Lila Jean Underwood, 76, of Jackson died Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2002, at her home.

She was born March 20, 1926, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of Zenas and Edith Goss Sitzes. She and Albert L. Underwood were married Dec. 23, 1943, in Abilene, Texas.

Lila was a lifetime resident of Cape Girardeau County. She was a 1943 graduate of Central High School. She and her daughter owned and operated MSS Arabian Show Horses and Breeding Co.

She was a member of First Baptist Church and a Sunday School teacher many years. She was a member of American Red Cross Board, member of Southeast Missouri Hospital Auxiliary 35 years, and was a past member of American Cancer Society Board.

Survivors include her husband; two sons and daughters-in-law, Albert and Cynthia Underwood Jr. and Ron and Dana Underwood, all of Cape Girardeau; a daughter and son-in-law, Cathy and Walter Lee Matthews of Jackson; a half sister, Judy Pulley of Cape Girardeau; six grandchildren, Leigh Seabaugh, Lynn Goeckeler, Crissi Matthews, Julie Underwood, Andy Matthews, Jenna Matthews, all of Cape Girardeau; three great-grandchildren; and an aunt, Mary Hunt of Cape Girardeau.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Friends may call at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home from 4 to 8 p.m. today.

The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, with Dr. Andy Pratt officiating. Burial will be in Cape County Memorial Park.

Pallbearers will be Joe Russell, Gene Ryan, Billie Lewis, Wendel Honey, Herschel Miller and Jim Stovall. Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Hinton, Ivan Irvin, Del Brunton, Bill Bowers and Charles McGinty.

Memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church or American Cancer Society.
