Urhahn, James L. "Gumbo"

SIKESTON, Mo. -- James L. "Gumbo" Urhahn, 71, of Sikeston passed away Monday, Feb. 10, 2014, at the family home.

He was born Nov. 7, 1942, in Cape Girardeau, to the late Leon Simon "Gumbo" and Verneda Marie Welter Urhahn. He married Jearldine Griswell on Feb. 19, 1966, in Oran, Mo.

James was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Sikeston, Knights of Columbus 3135, Sikeston Elks Lodge 2319, and was a volunteer with Sikeston Fire and Rescue more than 25 years. He retired as a maintenance man from Bunny Bread in Sikeston.

Survivors include his wife, Jearldine of the home; a son, James "Tim" Urhahn of Fruitland; a daughter, Tamara Sanders of Morley, Mo.; three brothers, Tom Urhahn of Oran, Augie Urhahn of Scott City and Rick Urhahn of Sikeston; four sisters, Mary C. Schott of Crestwood, Mo., Lynda Hess of Malden, Mo., Anna Stringfellow of Millington, Tenn., and Laurie Smith of Overland, Mo.; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, James L. Urhahn Jr., and a brother, Paul Urhahn.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Wednesday at Amick-Burnett Funeral Chapel in Oran. The parish rosary will be at 5 p.m., followed by Knights of Columbus prayers.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Church, with monsignors William Stanton and Richard Rolwing and the Rev. Patrick Nwokoye as celebrants. Burial will be in Garden of Memories at Sikeston.
