Williams, Helen L. (nee Steck)

Helen Steck Malone Williams, 97, of Austin, Texas, passed away Monday, Nov. 22, 2010.

She was born Nov. 5, 1913, in Cape Girardeau, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Philip H. Steck. Her father served on the local city council 25 years, longer than any other elected official at the time.

Williams was a teacher many years.

A private service will be scheduled at a later date.

Helen Malone Williams was born November 5, 1913 in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. She passed away November 22, 2010, peacefully surrounded by many family members at home in Hyde Park in Austin, Texas. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Philip H Steck of Cape Girardeau, Missouri. Mrs. Williams was considered a Master Teacher who had many student teachers from the University of Texas that she worked with over the years. She was also very popular with her students, many of whom entered the field of art successfully after studying with her. After graduation, many returned to her school to visit with her.

Mrs. Williams graduated from South East Missouri University with a major in History and a minor in Latin. She began teaching at a very early age due to many promotions throughout her education. In the summer, she attended Peabody College in Nashville, Tennessee to work on her Masters Degree. Here she met her future husband, J.B. Malone who was a 5th generation Texan, also working on his Masters Degree at Peabody. Mr. and Mrs. Malone married and moved to Gainsville, Texas where their only child, Sarah Kathryn Malone was born. After a few years in Gainesville, where Mr. Malone was the principal of the High School, they moved to Austin, Texas. Mr. Malone became Vice Principal of Baker School, which went from first grade through ninth grade. Mrs. Malone became a stay at home mother for a few years. She then returned to the teaching profession. Some of the schools where she taught were; Bryker Woods, Robert E. Lee, Becker, and Lamar Junior High, which she helped open. The subject she primarily taught was art. She taught for approximately thirty plus years overall.

Later, she was united in marriage with W.T. Williams, Jr., former City Attorney and City Manager for the City of Austin. She and Bill had a wonderful life together, traveling throughout Great Britain and Europe, as well as parts of America's North-Eastern areas. Mrs. Williams was eclectic in her religious affiliations. Her youth was spent as a Lutheran. After her marriage to Mr. Malone, she joined his church, Central Christian Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir for years. She was also a Deaconess there. After her marriage to Bill, she joined his church, St. David's Episcopal Church. She served St. David's primarily through the Next to New shop for many, many years. After Bill's retirement, another service they performed together was delivering Meals on Wheels. Mrs. Williams was also an active member of the Eastern Stars.

Mrs. Williams was extremely fond of her extended family and is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Sarah Malone Turner, grandsons William Marc Turner (Carol) of Round Rock, Texas, and Michael Philip Turner (Dawn) of Austin Texas. She was predeceased by her husband, Bill Williams, Jr. and her grandson Miles Bennett Turner. She is also survived by four great-grandchildren; Myles Maverick Turner (Katie), SSgt Sarah Elizabeth Turner Bickel USMC (Oliver), Matthew Allen Turner, and Brady Philip Turner. She is also survived by her sister, Mrs. James McLeod of El Paso, Texas and niece, Mrs. Gary Cooper and family in Marble Hill, Missouri. There are other family members in this area as well. She is also survived by her step-son, W.T. Williams III and family as well as her Step-Daughter Dee Dee Williams Brown (Sid) and family. Following her wishes, there will be no formal funeral ceremonies. A private remembrance will be held with immediate family in attendance at a later date.
