Winkler, Beatrice May (nee Cashion)
Beatrice May Winkler, 99, formerly of Perryville, Mo., and Houston, Texas, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005.
She was born June 23, 1905, in Perryville, daughter of Charles E. and Dora M. Tucker Cashion. She and Barnard L. Winkler were married June 3, 1944, in St. Louis. He died Jan. 26, 2002.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and a brother.
Beatrice received an RN degree from St. Luke's Hospital in St. Louis, a specialist degree in health services from Western Reserve University in Detroit, Mich., and a master's degree in nursing from the University of Houston.
She was a registered nurse in St. Louis and East St. Louis, Ill., until 1942. During World War II she served stateside in the U.S. Nursing Corps. She was a nurse in the American Red Cross in Houston, where she also volunteered as a nurse for the Hawthorne and Almeda Elementary Schools. She taught in the Department of Nursing at the University of Houston, and was on the executive board of Methodist Hospital in Houston.
While living in Houston, Beatrice was an active member of the Greater Houston Garden Club, where she also taught flower arrangement. She was a judge of flower shows in Houston and throughout South Texas, a member and judge at the Houston Crafts Fair, a member and officer of the Civic Club, an executive board member of the Federation Law Club, and was active in other Houston civic and cultural organizations.
Following the retirement of her husband, the Winklers traveled extensively in Mexico, Europe and Israel. They moved to Chateau Girardeau in 1992.
Beatrice Cashion Winkler is fondly remembered by her sister-in-law, Dorothy Meehan of Kirkwood, Mo.; and by her nephews and nieces: Harry Guth, Nancy Moore, Cozy Fiala, David Bierk, and Stephen Bierk, all of Perryville; Bill Robinson of Spartanburg, S.C.; and John C. Bierk of Cape Girardeau.
Cracraft-Miller Funeral Home in Jackson is in charge of arrangements.
