Winschel, Gilbert L.

Gilbert L. Winschel, 78, of Cape Girardeau died Tuesday, April 24, 2007, at Southeast Missouri Hospital.

He was born Jan. 17, 1929, at Old Appleton, Mo., son of Andrew G. and Philomena T. Ponder Winschel. He and Wanda Proffer Winschel were married May 14, 1949.

Winschel served in the Army National Guard from 1947 to 1989, retiring as a sergeant. He also had been a real estate owner. He was a member of St. Mary's Cathedral, Notre Dame Booster Club, Knights of Columbus Council 1111, Army National Guard Unit 1140, Company B in Perryville, was a past grand counselor of Missouri for United Commercial Travelers of America Council 534, and member of the Knot Hole Gang. Buddy Winkler and Marvin Reddick are the surviving members of the Knot Hole Gang.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Tim, Daniel and Ricky Winschel of Cape Girardeau; two daughters, Angela Winschel and Amanda Bowman of Cape Girardeau; five sisters, Shirley Huber of Cape Girardeau, Marie Hayden and Rita Richardet of Perryville, Mo., Veronica Butler of Kissimmee, Fla., Lorraine Timmerman of Florida and New York; four grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister.

Friends may call from 4:30 to 8 p.m. today at Lorberg Memorial Funeral Chapel. Parish prayers will be at 7, followed by Knights of Columbus rosary.

Funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Cathedral, with the Rev. Patrick Nwokoye officiating. Burial will be at noon in St. Boniface Cemetery at Perryville with full military honors.
