Young, Pauline (nee Schumacher)
Pauline Young, 83, passed away peacefully Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at Jackson Manor.
She was born Aug. 16, 1927, in Cape Girardeau, fifth child and second daughter of Frederick R. and Ruth Smith Schumacher. She and the love of her life, Russell "Sunny" Young, eloped to Mississippi County, Ark., July 21, 1944.
They set up house in Cape Girardeau and were blessed with four children -- a son, Mike, and three daughters, Vicki, Julie and Sandi.
Pauline and Sunny had many interests, one of these was bowling and both were accredited bowlers. Along with other business partners they opened Cape Bowling Lanes in 1959, and shared their love of the sport with their children. Many hours of fun family time can be remembered by many at Cape Bowling Lanes.
Sunny and Pauline were appointed to manage the Cape Girardeau License Bureau Office, and when Sunny passed away Dec. 8, 1965, Pauline took all the responsibilities of that job, as well as the job of being both mom and dad to their growing children.
Pauline's interest in politics grew as her family did, and in 1974 she resigned her position with the license bureau to run on the Democratic ticket for recorder of deeds, where she served until 1977. She returned to her position as manager of the local license bureau in 1978 and continued to be active in the Democratic Party.
She was vice chairwoman of the Cape County Democratic Committee and was proud of being the 8th District delegate from Missouri to the Democratic National Convention in San Francisco in 1984.
She was a stylish, active, energetic lady and never liked being idle for long. She was administrator of health and welfare for Craftsman Independent Union, Realtor with Cape Realty Co., served on the Salvation Army Board of Directors and was a member of St. Vincent's Catholic Church.
Survivors include a son, Mike (Ana) Young of Granite Bay, Calif.; three daughters, Vicki (Mike) Long of Kennett, Mo., Julie (Vince) Draper of Benton, Mo., Sandi Young of LaQuinta, Calif.; a granddaughter, Laura Putnam; two great-grandchildren, Riley and Emmie Putnam; a brother, Albert Schumacher of Minnesota; a brother-in-law, Edward Downs of Cape Girardeau; a special nephew, Edward L. Downs Jr.; and a special family friend and caregiver to Pauline, Betty Williamson of Cape Girardeau.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two brothers, Carl and Howard Schumacher; and a sister, Juanita Downs.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to service time Wednesday at Ford and Sons Mount Auburn Funeral Home.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Oscar Lukefahr officiating.
A private memorial service for the family will follow at Cape County Memorial Park Mausoleum.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Crown Hospice, which was very helpful during Pauline's illness; Salvation Army; and The Cadie Project/Sunny Center.
