FROM THE EDITOR

This is the last issue of this year and time to look ahead to next year. I hope that you will all subscribe next year and those of you who did not submit queries this year will do so next year. Please tell any others interested in these families to subscribe, my research efforts have been somewhat hampered by lack of funds. With more subscribers I could do much more. I do plan to take a trip to the Salt Lake Library next year and that should produce some good information. There is other information in the eastern U.S. to which I simply do not have access. Thank you again to those who have sent information. There is nothing like a receiving an envelope full of family data to brighten my day.

CORRECTION: In Issue Three page 2, Casper Statler birth year was printed as "1843" which is one hundred years off. It should have been 1743.

Research Aid

In the last issue I gave some examples of searching census records for information. I think that a few more examples might be of value.

Roselind Hood wrote that her father Charles Alvin Stotler was orphaned at an early age. He was born April 28, 1878 near Lerna, Illinois. Lerna is in Coles County. Since he would have been two years old in 1880 his family should appear in the 1880 Soundex. I believe that this is his family:

Pleasant Grove, Coles County, Illinois

Statler, Ambrose Age 32 Born Ohio
"          Susan 30 Ind.
"        Amy E. 9 Ill.
"    William H. 8
"      James H. 5
"    Charles A. 2
"       Sarah F. 2/12

Ambrose is a fairly easy name to search for in the 1850 census in Monroe Township, Perry County, Ohio is this family:

Age Born
Peter         Statler 46 Farmer Va.
Elizabeth        " 44 Ohio
John A.          " 24 Laborer
Henry            " 22 "
Simon Peter   " 20 "
Lorenzo D     " 18 Carder
William          " 18 "
Mary A.        " 16
Catharine      " 15
Elizabeth        " 13
Narcissa        " 12
Obediah        " 10
George W.    " 5
Ambrose       " 2
Lorinda         " 2
Isaac             " 8/12

I would place these families in Group 10 for the reasons I gave in Issue Two Page 8. I think the fact that they were in the correct location is more significant than that the name is spelled "Statler" rather than "Stotler".

(end of page 2)

From Patricia Stetler Boone, I received information that her ancestor William Allen Stetler was born in Elkhart Co. Indiana, the son of John and Catherine (Shoupe) Stetler.

In the 1900 Soundex Benton Township, Elkhart Co., Ind. is the following family

Stetler William H. A. Born May 1846 Age 54 Born in Ind.
     "     Mary A. Dec. 1848 51 Ohio
     "     Jerston O. Mar. 1872 28 Ind
     "     Frederick C. Feb. 1879 21 "
     "     Walter A. Mar. 1883 17 "
     "     Floyd J. Nov. 1890 9 "

In 1880 again in Benton Township, Elkhart Co.

Stetler      Allen 34 Ind.
"          Mary 31 Ohio
"   Charles F. 10 Ind
"        Justine 8
"          Cora 5
"        Fredie 1

The following family is in the 1850 census for Benton Township, Elkhart County, Indiana page 143.

John Stetle 51 Cooper PA
Catherine Stetler 46
Hiram 20 Ohio
Samuel 18
Martha A. 16
John 12 Ind.
Ira 9
Diancu M. 7
Allen 4

From the IGI (International Genealogical Index) records for Ohio, John Stetler married Catharine Shoup on 11 May 1826 in Montgomery County, Ohio. This information would place this family in Group 17. It is possible that John is the grandson of George V. Stetler who brought his family to Montgomery County, Ohio from Berks County, Pennsylvania about 1802. His son's were William, Henry, Daniel, George Junior, and Jacob.

Daniel's children: Daniel; Hannah; Philip; and George

Jacob's children: Jacob; Michael; Daniel; and another son who died before Jacob, leaving a son John.

George Junior's children: Henry and Elizabeth.

Henry died about 1845 leaving at least two minor son's Henry and Jacob.

I have no record of William's children.

The most likely father of John would be Henry or William. I don't have a record of William in the 1820 census, but Henry had six young male in his household. One in the right age group of 18 to 26 years old.

QUERY

FROM

Want information concerning ___ Hedelson, who married Eliza Jane Stotler, who was born to Katie and Joseph Stotler May 2, 1832, 2 mile NW of Winchester, Ohio. Hedelson was one of several husbands. Her first husband was named Secondollar (or Seconddollar) and they had one son Lemuel. Another husband was named Butler. With Hedelson, she had one son Edward (or William Edward) born May 26, 1856. These boys were orphaned as children. Levi Collins Stotler raised Lemuel. Who raised Edward?

ED. NOTE; Eliza Jane must be the seventeen year old girl living with Joseph and Catherine Stotler in Brown County, Ohio in 1850 (see Issue 3 page 4). It is possible that when the children of Eliza Jane were orphaned that there was some court procedure to provide for their guardianship. Since Levi stayed in Brown County, Ohio that would be the first place to look. Some of Joseph's children moved to Williamson County, Illinois and some lived in Highland County, Ohio. You might first try writing to the Probate Judge for probate records of Hedelson and the Clerk of Courts for guardianship records (in Brown County these would be in Georgetown zip 45121). Be sure and give the approximate time these records rnight exist. Some counties are very helpful and some will just recomrnend that you hire a professional researcher in that area. It is possible that this records have been filmed by the LDS Genealogical Library and could be borrowed through one of their local branches.

Peter Statler Group 6
(continued from Issue Three Page 9)

The petition for naturalization of Peter Statler appears in the Records of the Court of Conmon Pleas of Cambria County in the December Term 1857.

The petition states that he arrived at the Port of New York in June of 1837 and that he was a subject of the King of Bavaria before coming to the United States. A statement as to his character was signed by Frederick Keiper and David Eash.

Peter's son Peter is found in the 1880 Soundex, in Richland Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania.

Transcribers Note:

Pages 7 through 12 provided an Index of all names that appeared in the 1986 Newsletters.  Along with each name, it listed which issue and page number the name could be found.  For now, this index will not be transcribed.
